In brief: Peru’s exports start year on a dip

* Peru’s institute of research and development of foreign trade at the Lima chamber of commerce (Idexcam) has released preliminary figures showing that Peru’s exports totalled US$3.22bn in January, a 13.17% decrease on the value of exports in January 2020. China was the principal destination for Peruvian exports in January (US$688m), followed by the US (US$560m), and Japan (US$244m). According to Idexcam, of Peru’s 10 top export destinations, only Japan and India saw a positive variation in exports compared with the previous year. Peru’s top export products were gold, copper minerals, fresh grapes, and natural gas. Earlier in February, Mario Ocharan, director of export promotions at PromPerú, the country’s tourism and export board, had said he expects a “strong recovery” of exports this year after Peru’s foreign trade was affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic last year.
