Mexico: On 16 February Mexico’s senate confirmed the appointment of former education minister,
Esteban Moctezuma Barragán (2018-2021), as Mexico’s new ambassador to the US. Moctezuma replaces
Martha Bárcena Coqui (2018-2021), Mexico’s first female ambassador to the US, who announced her resignation in December 2020. The senate ratified President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s appointment of Moctezuma by 115 votes in favour. Previously affiliated with the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) but now a member of Mexico’s ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party, Moctezuma is a former senator (1997-1998), who served as minister of social development (1998-1999) and the interior (1994-1995) under the PRI government led by former president
Ernesto Zedillo (1994-2000). The
Twitter account of Mexico’s foreign ministry (SRE) has posted a video of the new ambassador discussing the importance of Mexico’s relationship with the US. Moctezuma said he would work hard to ensure the relationship stays constructive and helps the 37m Mexicans living in the US.
