In brief: Nicaragua’s private sector lobby warns of plastic shortages

* Nicaragua’s private sector lobby Cámara de Industrias de Nicaragua (Cadin) has warned that plastic prices will increase to above 100% of what they were in the first quarter of 2020, due to a shortage in raw material caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. A Cadin statement identifies various causes of the plastic shortage, including: a sudden rise in demand of medical supplies and equipment in order to address the pandemic; the closure of production plants due to quarantines imposed around the world; logistical issues (such as a lack of containers); and storms in the US which limited petrochemical extraction, among other things.
