HAITI: Key anniversary sparks fresh protests
The 34th anniversary of Haiti’s constitution has proven the latest rallying point for protesters opposed to both President Jovenel Moïse’s insistence on pushing ahead with a referendum on a new magna carta and, more generally, his mandate, which his opponents maintain ended in February [WR-21-07]. The protests, which drew thousands in Port-au-Prince on 28 and 29 March, take place amid a fresh source of concern regarding the deteriorating security situation - dissent within the national police (PNd’H). While the international community continues to maintain its backing for Moïse in the dispute over term limits, a recent statement by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) suggests patience could be wearing thin.
