CUBA: Looking to call the shots

Last month Cuba’s government led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel announced it would begin inoculating 150,000 Cubans with its own vaccines against the coronavirus (Covid-19), as part of the final phase of a clinical trial of the country’s leading vaccine candidate, Soberana 02. With another Covid-19 vaccine candidate, Abdala, also beginning the third and final phase of testing last month and three other candidate vaccines in different phases of clinical trials, Cuba is a significant step closer to producing Latin America’s first vaccine against the virus.
