In brief: Costa Rica’s unemployment dips

* Costa Rica’s national statistics institute (Inec) has released new figures which show that the national unemployment rate for the December 2020-February 2021 rolling quarter was 18.5%. This is a decrease of six percentage points on the previous rolling quarter (November 2020-January 2021) but represents a 6.3 percentage-point increase on the unemployment rate in the same quarter a year earlier – a rise which stems from the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on the economy. The figures for the December 2020-February 2021 quarter show that unemployment is higher among women (25.0%) than men (14.1%).
