In brief: Argentina’s Guzmán begins European tour to renegotiate debt

* Argentina’s economy minister, Martín Guzmán, has begun an official visit to Europe where he will meet with various countries to discuss renegotiating Argentina’s debts with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Paris Club group of creditor nations. The minister's principal objective of the trip is to “get the necessary support from IMF shareholders to implement a programme that will serve Argentina”. Guzmán will meet with various finance ministers, civil servants, and private sector representatives in Berlin, Rome, and Madrid, with his European tour ending in Paris on 16 April. Argentina has been in negotiations with the IMF since 2020 to refinance its outstanding US$44bn debt, whilst the government is also seeking to negotiate the restructuring of a US$2.4bn maturity with the Paris Club by the end of May, or risk defaulting on this debt.
