* The president of Mexico’s central bank (Banxico),
Alejandro Díaz de León, has said that the country faces challenges on its path to economic recovery from the crisis caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Speaking at the 1st Ibero-American meeting of central banks, organised by Spain’s central bank Banco de España and the Ibero-American general secretariat (Segib), Díaz de León warned that Mexico faces a
“heterogeneous” recovery from the serious economic shock dealt by the pandemic, dependent on
“the motor of vaccination” and
“the motor of spending supports”. Díaz de León’s caution comes as forecasts for Mexico’s GDP growth this year have been revised up, with Finance Minister
Arturo Herrera saying that the finance ministry’s (SHCP) forecast of 5.3% growth is
“realistic”.
