In brief: Brazil’s services sector returns to pre-pandemic levels

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for the services sector, which grew 3.7% in February compared with January, the ninth consecutive positive monthly result. In year-on-year terms, the volume of services fell 2% in February, however, the sector has recovered the losses incurred last year at the start of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and now finds itself 0.9% above February 2020 levels. The transport and related services category saw a solid performance, growing 4.4% compared with January and now standing 2.8% above pre-pandemic levels. The services to families segment also recorded a strong monthly performance, expanding 8.8%, but it remains 23.7% below pre-pandemic levels, with Ibge researcher Rodrigo Lobo explaining that it is the category that has been the most affected by the pandemic and related restrictions.
