BRAZIL: Environmental pledges ring hollow
Speaking at the US-hosted virtual Leaders Summit on Climate on 22 April, President Jair Bolsonaro made several promises regarding Brazil’s climate commitments, including that of doubling funding for environmental enforcement efforts. Yet less than a day later, he vetoed a third of the budget for the environment ministry (MMA) for this year, confirming the doubts of those who had received his speech with scepticism.
