ARGENTINA-CHILE: Neuquén protests spill over to Chile

A protest staged by public health sector workers in Argentina’s southern province of Neuquén over salaries is having repercussions across the border in Chile. The protest comes amid a surge in cases of coronavirus (Covid-19) in Argentina, which has prompted President Alberto Fernández to impose tougher restrictions to try and reduce transmission and the risk that the public health system could be overwhelmed. The ruling Partido Justicialista (PJ) and main opposition coalition Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) even managed to set aside their differences to agree to postpone the simultaneous and mandatory open primaries (Paso) from 9 August to 12 September, and mid-term legislative elections from 24 October to 14 November this year.
