In brief: GM announces over US$1bn investment in Mexico

* US automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) has announced an investment of over US$1bn in the Ramos Arizpe manufacturing complex in Mexico’s Coahuila state. The investment will be used to inaugurate a new paint shop, scheduled to begin operations in June, and new capacity for battery packs and other electronic components such as electric motors, which will begin in the second half of 2021, with plans to produce electric cars as of 2023. This would make the Ramos Arizpe site GM’s fifth manufacturing site in North America for the production of electric cars, along with three sites in the US and one in Canada. The Ramos Arizpe complex, which currently assembles conventional internal-combustion vehicles, provides 5,600 direct jobs.
