In brief: Chile posts solid economic activity in March

* Chile’s central bank (BCCh) has released the latest figures for its monthly index of economic activity (Imacec), which saw a 6.4% year-on-year variation in March. The seasonally-adjusted Imacec contracted 1% in March compared with February, and grew 5% in the 12 months to March. The Imacec’s year-on-year variation in March is the indicator’s strongest performance since the start of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic; the BCCh notes that this can be in part explained by the lower base of comparison, as the economy went into shutdown in March 2020 when the pandemic first hit. Finance Minister Rodrigo Cerda noted that the March 2021 Imacec “is good news for the economy and a boost for reactivation”, but warned that “there is still a long way to go”.
