EASTERN CARIBBEAN: Living with seismic disaster

The eruption of La Soufrière on St Vincent is not an unusual or unexpected event. According to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) the islands of the Eastern Caribbean are home to 19 live volcanic centres (see map below). The inhabitants of the small-island states of the Eastern Caribbean live with the ever-present threat of seismic disaster, a threat to which there are no solutions, only mitigation and well-planned disaster relief.
