VENEZUELA: Guaidó proposes negotiated solution to crisis
After a bruising stint on the political sidelines, on 11 May Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó announced a significant change of approach. Striking down two of the most controversial tenets of his longstanding strategy, he professed a willingness to enter into negotiations with Nicolás Maduro’s government, as well as conditional support for a progressive lifting of sanctions. The change of tack is an implicit acknowledgement that Guaidó’s maximum pressure strategy has failed to deliver, but also reflects his diminished stature in politics and with the public at large. With few signs that he can still bring the country to a halt with mass demonstrations, Guaidó appears to have decided that dialogue is his best chance of success.
