In brief: Car production up in Mexico

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show that 241,442 cars were produced in May, up 956% on the same month in 2020. The change is not a huge surprise given the closure of car manufacturing plants last year to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). In the first five months of 2021, 1.33m cars were produced, up 38% on the same period in 2020. The figures also show that 242,020 cars were exported in May, up 1,498% on the same month in 2020 when just 15,139 cars were exported. Meanwhile 85,662 cars were sold in May – a 104% increase on May 2020 – while 428,312 cars were sold in the first five months of 2021, up 14.62% on the same period in 2020.
