In brief: Chile opens Latin America’s first thermosolar plant

* Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has inaugurated the Cerro Dominador thermosolar plant in Antofagasta Region, which is the first of its kind in Latin America. Thermosolar energy differs to traditional solar power by storing heat that can be turned into electricity at a later time. According to a presidential press release, the plant will generate 210 megawatts of clean energy, capable of delivering an uninterrupted energy supply to 382,000 homes, and will avoid the emission of approximately 630,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year. The statement added that Chile’s use of solar and wind energy has increased by a factor of ten in the last six years, and that the take-up of these renewable technologies has enabled the country to produce 70 times more energy than it consumes. Piñera said that Chile’s drive towards clean energy would continue for the remainder of his presidency, promising “to inaugurate more clean energy projects in Chile this year than in the whole prior history of our country”.
