In brief: Brazil’s coffee exports fall in May

* Brazil’s national council of coffee exporters (Cecafé) has released the results of coffee exports for the month of May, according to which Brazil exported 2.6m sacks of coffee (one sack = 60kg) last month, for a total value of US$357.6m. This represents a 20.3% reduction in volume and 13.2% reduction in value on exports a year earlier, in May 2020. Cecafé has explained this by citing “continual logistical problems” as well as the challenges posed by the process of issuing the new certificates of origin as required by the International Coffee Organization (ICO). However, Cecafé has stressed that the sector’s overall performance during the 2020/2021 harvest remains particularly positive.
