In brief: Cuba tallies cost of US embargo

* Cuba’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez, has put the cost of the US embargo on Cuba between April 2019 and December 2020 at US$9.16bn, bringing the total over the past six decades to US$147.85bn. The Cuban government continues to push for the embargo to be lifted particularly in the context of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which, along with the US sanctions intensified under the previous US administration led by Donald Trump (2017-2021), saw Cuba’s GDP contract 11% in 2020.
