* The Argentine government led by President Alberto Fernández has announced the resumption of beef exports, following their suspension for a month from mid-May as part of efforts to stabilise the price of beef on the domestic market. However, restrictions still apply: up until 31 August, exports cannot exceed 50% of the monthly average sold abroad in 2020, while the export ban remains in place until 31 December for certain cuts of beef which are particularly popular in Argentina, to guarantee supply “while the market puts itself back in order”. Agriculture Minister Luis Basterra and productive development minister, Matías Kulfas, have also announced the launch of a ‘livestock plan’, described as a “a set of technical and financial assistance policies for the sector’s entire production chain”, with the aim of increasing productivity in the livestock sector. The plan is to be implemented within the next 30 days, with the medium-term objective of increasing national beef production from 3.2m tonnes (t) per year to 5mt. Of these, 3mt would be destined for the domestic market and 2m for exports.
