In brief: Chile’s unemployment rate improves

* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released its latest unemployment figures which show that the national unemployment rate was 10% in the March-May 2021 rolling quarter, an improvement on the 11.2% rate registered for the same quarter in 2020. The INE figures also show that the March-May 2021 figure was the lowest of the past 12 months. Unemployment is higher amongst women (10.3%) than men (9.8%). So-called ‘absent workers’ – which includes workers furloughed in the context of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic – represent 10% of the active workforce, around 343,610 people, a 29.9% decline on last year.
