EL SALVADOR: New water law stokes debate

“Addressing an historic debt”. This was the claim by national assembly president Ernesto Castro of the ruling Nuevas Ideas (NI) upon receiving the government’s proposed bill on the management of water resources. The bill was hotly anticipated: the issue has been debated for years amid mounting concerns about water scarcity in El Salvador due to factors like climate change, deforestation, and pollution. While congressional deadlock in previous legislatures held up approval of earlier bills, the NI has a two-thirds majority in the new congress, removing this obstacle.
