* Brazil’s foreign trade secretariat (Secex) has released the latest figures on exports, which reached record levels in the first six months of 2021, along with the country’s trade surplus and value of trade – a result of strong commodities prices. Exports in the first half of the year totalled US$136.7bn, a 35.8% increase on the value of exports over the same period in 2020. Meanwhile the overall value of trade for January-June 2021 totalled US$236bn, up 31.8%, while the trade surplus for that period increased 68.2% year-on-year to US$37.5bn. The month of June alone also saw a strong performance, with exports totalling US$28.1bn, the highest value since historical records began in 1997 – beating the previous record for June recorded in 2011. This represents a 60.8% increase on the value of imports in June 2020, with the Secex citing both higher prices and higher volumes of exports as an explanation.
