BRAZIL: Unanswered questions over Rio police massacre

A raid on Jacarezinho – one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest, poorest, and most violent favelas – in May became the deadliest police operation ever carried out in the Brazilian city. It left 27 local men and one police officer dead, sparking widespread anger and outrage at police violence and the system that sustains it, and prompting calls for change and justice. Yet many questions which would help bring this about remain unanswered.
