ARGENTINA: Concerns over ‘lawfare’ impact on press freedom

Argentina has slipped in the latest press freedom ranking by NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF), while press organisations in the country have also raised concerns over the erosion of press freedom. The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic is one factor that has darkened the outlook for the media over the last year, but press organisations also cite judicial persecution against journalists, which is often linked to the Argentine government’s crusade against ‘lawfare’ [SSR-20-04]. The ruling Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists) considers lawfare to be the use of judicial instruments to persecute its members, a practice in which Peronists accuse the media of being complicit.
