Special Report - Drugs in Latin America: Part 2 (ISSN 17414474)

More than just a transit route

Although domestic consumption of illegal drugs is low, Central America remains a major transhipment point for illegal drugs. It is a convenient half way point between Colombia and Mexico and the region contains large areas of sparsely populated jungle and unpoliced coastlines. The gangsters' favourite spots include the Laguna del Tigre Park in Guatemala; Mosquita in Honduras and the Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua. These areas are ideal way-stations for refuelling, repackaging and stockpiling.
