NICARAGUA: Opposition arrests draw international condemnation

“Under [President Daniel] Ortega, Nicaragua is becoming an international pariah” tweeted then US Acting Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Julie Chung on 5 June. Four days later, Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary-General Luis Almagro called an urgent meeting of OAS members to consider suspending Nicaragua from the hemispheric body – a threat he already floated last year.
