In brief: Argentina’s monthly economic activity slows in May

* Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released the latest figures for its monthly index of economic activity (Emae), which expanded 13.6% year-on-year in May, a performance largely due to the low basis of comparison given the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on the economy in May 2020. In seasonally-adjusted terms, Argentina’s economic activity slumped 2% in May compared with April. In annual terms, only activity in the agricultural, livestock, hunting and forestry sector contracted (-4.3%), while the other sectors saw a strong performance, notably construction (52.1%) and hotels & restaurants (54.3%).
