EL SALVADOR: FMLN now targeted in opposition crackdown
El Salvador’s attorney general’s office has announced formal corruption charges against former president Salvador Sánchez Cerén (2014-2019) of the left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) and nine others who served under the FMLN government led by Mauricio Funes (2009-2014). The Nuevas Ideas (NI) government led by President Nayib Bukele claims that the arrests are in line with efforts to tackle past corruption. However, critics accuse the new attorney general, Rodolfo Delgado, who was appointed by the new NI-controlled legislature which fired his predecessor Raúl Melara upon taking up its seats in May [WR-21-19], of politicising justice while turning a blind eye to corruption allegations implicating members of Bukele’s inner circle [WR-21-27].
