Protests erupt in Guatemala

Thousands of Guatemalans have taken to the streets to demand the resignation of President Alejandro Giammattei and the attorney general, María Consuelo Porras, in connection with a corruption probe. Protesters have blocked access roads to Guatemala City from the north and the west of the capital to denounce the decision by Porras to dismiss the widely respected anti-corruption prosecutor, Juan Francisco Sandoval. The US Department of State also took prompt action in response to Sandoval’s dismissal.
