PERU: Plan to accelerate adaptation to climate change

Peru’s environment ministry approved a National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (PNACC) on 9 June, which it says will establish a 30-year roadmap for achieving sustainable development. The outgoing President Francisco Sagasti hopes that the PNACC will be used by his successor to achieve the emissions reductions targets (NDC) that were established when the country signed the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change. Peru faces environmental challenges on multiple fronts, and there is little doubt that such a plan is necessary. However, the country’s reliance on extractive industry raises questions over the extent to which future governments will commit to those targets.
