In brief: Chile’s unemployment rate decreases

* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has announced that the country’s unemployment rate fell to 9.5% over the period of April-June 2021, the first time it has fallen below 10% since April 2020, shortly after the coronavirus (Covid-19) hit. The Q2 figure represents a decrease of 2.7 percentage points compared with the same period last year, and a decrease of 0.5 percentage points compared with the immediately preceding rolling quarter (March-May 2021). Women are more likely to be unemployed than men, with an unemployment rate of 9.7% compared with 9.3% for men. Geographically, the Santiago Metropolitan Region has a higher unemployment rate than the national figure, standing at 10.3%. According to the INE, the employed population grew 12.6% year-on-year thanks to job growth in the construction, trade, and accommodation & food services sectors. Of those employed, 26% work in the informal sector, an increase of 3.6 percentage points over the last 12 months.
