BOLIVIA: Protests mark extension of Áñez’s detention
The preventive detention of Bolivia’s former interim president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) was extended by a further six months on 3 August. Facing an array of charges relating to her presidency and the alleged coup against her predecessor Evo Morales (2006-2019), Áñez’s imprisonment continues to polarise Bolivian society. The prolongation of her detention came on the same day that protests were announced against the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government following the closing of an investigation by the attorney general’s office into alleged electoral fraud by Morales in the disputed October 2019 election, which ended with Morales fleeing the country and Áñez assuming the presidency.
