In brief: Pilot project links remote communities to internet in Chile

* Chile’s transport and telecommunications minister, Gloria Hutt, and the deputy secretary for telecommunications, Francisco Moreno, have officially launched Starlink satellite internet services in the locality of Sotomó in the southern Los Lagos Region. Starlink technology, owned by Elon Musk, the CEO of US-based electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla, uses satellites to connect remote communities to the internet in rural areas where connectivity is traditionally a challenge. Hutt said that “this revolutionary technology will allow us to bring high-speed connection to the most extreme points of our immense and varied geography, democratising internet access and all the benefits it brings to multiple areas of our lives”. Moreno added that “increasing digital inclusion is a fundamental part” of the ministry’s work. The two officials visited the school in Sotomó where the Starlink antenna has been installed around a week after its installation, and noted that it worked very well. As part of a pilot project launched by Starlink, Sotomó is the first place in Latin America to benefit from the firm’s satellite services and will soon be joined by Caleta Sierra in Chile’s Coquimbo Region, north of Santiago, a community which is also in an extremely remote geographical location.
