BOLIVIA: Difficult times for the elite

Historically Bolivia has one of the most unequal distributions of wealth in the region; as late as 2008, the government claimed (based on United Nations Development Fund findings) that there are some 100 feudal-style families who own 25 m hectares of land (out of a total of 108m) in the country. However, with his implementation of a new constitution based on redistributing wealth to Bolivia's poor indigenous majority, President Evo Morales, who assumed power in 2006, undoubtedly constitutes the biggest threat to the country's landed elite in decades.
