Historically Bolivia
has one of the most unequal distributions of wealth in the region; as late as
2008, the government claimed (based on United Nations Development Fund findings)
that there are some 100 feudal-style families who own 25 m hectares of land (out
of a total of 108m) in the country. However, with his implementation of a new
constitution based on redistributing wealth to Bolivia's poor indigenous
majority, President Evo Morales, who assumed power in 2006, undoubtedly
constitutes the biggest threat to the country's landed elite in
