In brief: Costa Rica hails recovery of tourism sector

* Costa Rica’s tourism institute (ICT), a government body, has announced that 149,915 international tourists visited Costa Rica in July via air, the highest monthly figure since the gradual reopening in August 2020 of Costa Rica’s air borders, which had been closed to stem the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). This brings the number of international tourists that visited Costa Rica via air between August 2020 and July 2021 to 766,303, equivalent to 49.88% of the number registered for the same time period the previous year. The main source of international tourists via air was the US, which accounted for 549,752 of the total, followed by Europe (110,907). Tourism Minister Gustavo Segura said that the latest figures indicated the start of the recovery process of the country’s tourism industry.
