ECUADOR: Is the honeymoon drawing to a close?

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso marked his 100th day in office on 31 August, meeting his campaign pledge to vaccinate 9m Ecuadoreans against the coronavirus (Covid-19) in that timeframe. In other matters, Lasso has moved to internationalise the country’s economy and improve diplomatic relations with the US. Storm clouds are forming, however, with Ecuador’s indigenous forces increasingly flexing their muscles as they seek to derail elements of Lasso’s free-market and extractivist agenda.
