In brief: BMW launches first fully Mexican-produced car

* German automaker BMW has celebrated the launch of its first car model entirely designed and manufactured in Mexico. Production of the BMW 2 Series Coupé has kicked off at the firm’s plant in the state of San Luis Potosí, which received an earlier investment of US$125m to accommodate this new production line. The market launch for this new car model is set for November this year, with exports to North America expected to begin by the end of 2021 and sales in Europe set to start in early 2022. “With the launch of this car, we have established San Luis as a strong plant in the [BMW global] network. I can only say that we are ready for more,” Harald Gottsche, the plant’s director, told Spanish newswire EFE. Mexico’s automobile industry has begun to recover from the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, with domestic car sales growing 16% year-on-year in the eight months to August according to the latest figures from the national statistics institute (Inegi), although a slowdown in sales in July and August reflects a global shortage of semiconductors which is affecting automobile manufacturing globally.
