* The US has announced the renewal of a High-Level Economic Dialogue (HLED) with Mexico, a dialogue set up under the administration of former US president Barack Obama (2009-2017), with a focus on “advancing economic and commercial strategies which are central to the promotion of mutual economic growth” between the two countries. The White House, announcing that the HLED is scheduled to be held for the first time since 2016 on 9 September, described its renewal as “a recognition of the broad, deep economic agenda that the United States shares with Mexico”. Mexico’s government announced that foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard, economy minister Tatiana Clouthier and deputy finance minister Gabriel Yorio will represent Mexico in Washington DC, whilst the US has not yet named its representatives. Both countries have stated that this year’s dialogue will focus on four central pillars: Building Back Together; Promoting Sustainable Economic and Social Development in Southern Mexico and Central America; Securing the Tools for Future Prosperity; and Investing in our People. According to the White House, the HLED serves to reinforce the bilateral relationship between the two countries on a full range of issues, which now include recovery from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and climate change.
