PERU: Castillo’s agenda overshadowed by Bellido’s travails

Peru’s President Pedro Castillo delivered a televised message on 6 September which sought to seize back the political initiative after a succession of bruising weeks for his government since he took office on 28 July. But while Castillo was spelling out various socio-economic programmes, his prime minister, Guido Bellido, was plunged into yet more controversy. Castillo continues to ignore the mounting evidence of links between Bellido and the Maoist guerrilla group Sendero Luminoso (SL), but the opposition-controlled congress is preparing to act against the prime minister. This, in turn, prompted the ruling far-left Perú Libre (PL) to present a motion of censure against the president of congress, María del Carmen Alva.
