* The Mexican state has won an arbitration case against French firm Eutelsat. In a statement, Mexico’s economy ministry (SE) explained that an international court has dismissed the US$120m claim that Eutelsat had brought against Mexico in July 2017, accusing it of having failed to respect the terms of the Agreement for Reciprocal Promotion and Protection of Investments (Appri) that Mexico has with France. A satellite company, Eutelsat acquired Mexican firm Satmex in 2014 and thus became the holder of the concessions previously awarded to Satmex for the occupation of orbital positions. Eutelsat’s claims that the Mexican state discriminated against the company compared with other firms in the sector have been rejected, and the French firm must now pay Mexico for the expenses derived from its defence in the arbitration case. “It is with pleasure that I share with you that, thanks to the arduous work of the lawyers in the SE’s undersecretariat for foreign trade, we have won an investor-state case in an international court”, Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier tweeted, adding that it is the third such favourable ruling that Mexico has received since the start of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s term in December 2018.
