PERU: Cabinet rift emerges regarding Venezuela

Peru’s hard-left Prime Minister Guido Bellido fired a warning shot across his own cabinet on 21 September, in response to apparent uncertainty over the government’s policy towards Venezuela. Bellido was pushing back against a comment by the deputy foreign minister, Luis Enrique Chávez, who had said that President Pedro Castillo’s administration does not recognise Nicolás Maduro’s government in Venezuela. In response, Bellido highlighted an unofficial meeting that allegedly took place between Castillo and Maduro on the sidelines of the 18-19 September summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) in Mexico, and warned that those unhappy with this have an “open door” to leave the government.
