ARGENTINA: Cristina and Alberto seek rapprochement

Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández and Vice President Cristina Fernández are making new efforts to show a united front ahead of the mid-term congressional elections on 14 November. Since the ruling Frente de Todos (FdT) coalition suffered a big setback in the primary elections on 12 September they have met only once – a tense affair two days later, when the vice president presented her list of demands and required cabinet changes, most of which the president ended up reluctantly accepting. That did not resolve all the issues between the two or provide a clear direction to the government’s last ditch election campaign to avoid another electoral humiliation in November.
