MEXICO: López Obrador: past and present independence
Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was in his element on 27 September as the steady flow of events marking the bicentenary of Mexico’s independence reached their climax with a show and fireworks in the Zócalo square in Mexico City. Combining this with the 500th anniversary of the conquest of the Aztec empire, which also falls this year, has been a major personal endeavour for López Obrador, an amateur history buff. His critics argue that, beyond upsetting Spain by seeking a formal apology for historical wrongs, his preoccupation with the distant past has distracted him from important issues in the present. This was brought into sharp focus by a large protest march to the Zócalo the very next day demanding greater female independence in the form of decriminalisation of abortion. López Obrador has consistently failed to stand up for women’s rights.
