Five federal senators left their respective parties to set up a new grouping this week. A former party president of the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) was joined by a senator from the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), two from its Maoist ally Partido del Trabajo (PT), and an independent. The new Grupo Parlamentario Plural (GPP) seeks to bridge the political divide and to elevate “national reconciliation” above the prevailing politics of confrontation espoused by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
