Brazil: On 21-25 September Admiral Craig Faller, the commander of the US Southern Command (Southcom), paid a visit to Brazil where he met military leaders to discuss the cooperative defence ties between Brazil and the US. According to a Southcom press release, on 22 September in Brasília, he met Brazil’s chief of the joint armed forces staff, Gen. Laerte de Souza Santos, and top defence leadership to discuss regional security and the growing defence partnership between both nations. The next day he visited Brazil’s aerospace operations command (Comae) to get a firsthand look at how the agency plans, coordinates, executes, and controls the country’s aerospace operations. In Rio de Janeiro on 23 September Faller visited Brazil’s peace operations joint training centre (CCOPAB) to see how it prepares the armed forces for peacekeeping missions. Brazil is significant contributor to United Nations peacekeeping missions worldwide. On 24 September in Rio de Janeiro, Faller met Brazilian navy leaders to discuss regional security and efforts to expand US-Brazil military-to-military cooperation. Faller also spent time with students and staff at the Escola Superior de Guerra, Brazil’s war college. According to the Southcom press release, the two countries “enjoy an increasingly close bilateral relationship. Both nations work together on wide range of partnership activities such as research and development, information exchanges, training and education, joint military exercises, cyber security, and the peaceful use of space”.
