In brief: Mexico welcomes reopening of US land borders

* Mexico’s government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has welcomed the announcement by its US counterpart that the US will reopen its land borders with Mexico and Canada to non-essential travellers who are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus (Covid-19) from November. The land borders had been closed since March 2020 to stem the spread of Covid-19. According to a 12 October statement by US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas announcing the change, “Cross-border travel creates significant economic activity in our border communities and benefits our broader economy. We are pleased to be taking steps to resume regular travel in a safe and sustainable manner.” Travellers will be required to have appropriate paperwork that provides proof of vaccination.
