VENEZUELA: Saab’s extradition derails dialogue process

Negotiations between Venezuela’s government and political opposition were unilaterally suspended by President Nicolás Maduro’s administration on 16 October, in protest at the extradition from Cape Verde to the US of the financier Alex Saab, an alleged fixer for Maduro. US prosecutors claim that Saab has been instrumental in helping the Venezuelan government to evade international economic sanctions. Venezuelan authorities, on the other hand, insist that Saab enjoys diplomatic immunity as a special envoy for Venezuela and have decried the extradition as a “kidnapping”.
