In brief: Lorry drivers strike in Brazil over fuel costs

* Independent lorry drivers across Brazil have staged a strike in protest at rising fuel prices, although the strike was less disruptive than anticipated given that, according to the infrastructure ministry, no roads were blocked. Many had predicted a repeat of the May 2018 lorry driver strikes, when key highways were blocked across Brazil resulting in shortages of food and fuel. Yesterday’s strike came amid mounting anger in the transport sector over the rising cost of petrol and diesel, triggering a rift between President Jair Bolsonaro and the state-owned oil company Petrobras. Yesterday, Petrobras assured that it is not intending to further raise fuel prices during the next 20 days, contradicting a statement from President Bolsonaro, who claimed that he knew “unofficially” that further price hikes were in the pipeline.
