* Brazil’s telecommunications regulator (Anatel) has opened its auction of fifth generation (5G) mobile spectrum, hoping to raise over R$40bn (US$7.13bn) in investments. On the first day of the auction, seven companies spent over R$7bn on spectrum rights. The Brazilian-Mexican telecom company Claro led the way, spending R$1.63bn for spectrum rights including the B1 batch of 3.5 GHz spectrum and the 2.3GHz E3 batch. Other notable bids included those of the domestic internet service provider Brisanet Participações, which obtained the rights to the C4 batch of 3.5GHz spectrum for R$1.25bn; Brazil’s Winity II, which won the 700MHz bandwidth for R$1.4bn; Spain’s Telefónica, which obtained the B2 batch of 3.5GHz spectrum with a R$420m bid; and Brazil’s TIM, which won the B3 batch of 3.5GHz at a cost of R$351m.
